If you ask for the most emancipated Magic players what they would like to see in magic arena in future you will get 2 answers. First, they would say a revamped economy, and second, more formats like Pioneer or Modern. Well, we don’t have any news on the economy, but today, Wizards of the Coast let them down magic arena Advertisement article, and it has some spicy information about the potential of Eternal formats in the game.
The introduction of the section talks about Alchemy. Overall, the team is happy with how Alchemy is progressing. They do, however, acknowledge player concerns about the impact of rebalanced maps in Historic. Right now it’s not a big concern as the rebalanced cards haven’t had too much of an impact.
They also recognize that with the introduction of alchemy and Jumpstart: Historical Horizonsdigital cards only, there is no longer a “true to paper” non-rotating format on Arena. The team hears us, the community, in our desire for such a format, and they are actively looking for ways to support an everlasting format. The question is what format?
There are a few things that WotC are considering what format to add to the game. The first being player feedback as well as the Organized Play team, which is critical. Second, and most importantly, they want to make sure the format they support will be set up for long-term success. So let’s think about what formats might be possible here.
Pioneer is the first in everyone’s mind. This is probably THE format most requested by the community. Unfortunately, from the OP’s perspective, there hasn’t been much major traction at Pioneer. It almost looks like a forgotten format, but it’s possible that an addition to Arena would reverse that. Technically, it’s much easier to add this, since the card pool is much smaller.
Another option that I think many would like is Modern. This is truly the player format and one of the most popular from an organized play perspective. While it would take a lot more effort to add the map pool, people would definitely love Modern coming to the game, and I’m sure there would be no shortage of support for organized play.

How are they going to do it?
This is the tricky part. I think that with the fantastic fiscal year that Wizards had, it is hoped that more resources will be allocated to the Arena team to make something like this happen. What the team told us is that they will be testing formats in the next few Midweek Magic events, similar to our recommendations for Limited Time Eternal Format Events.
What’s interesting is that if we look at the set of upcoming events, there is a “Blast From the Past” event from February 22 to February 24. There’s no event info underneath, so maybe this is a place where an Eternal Event could be tested? We’ll have to wait and see what pops up there, but in the end, it’s great news to know that the development team is listening to the community and making progress on giving players more options to play. Magic numerically.
