The NBA can see some changes in the competition format among the 30 teams participating in the league, and these changes could be coming soon.
In an effort to make the game more competitive, dynamic and entertaining, the NBA and the NBA Players Association have been in talks to define the details of a future tournament during the season.
Smoothen the matter
The two parties are discussing the elements of the tournament and these could be implemented from the 2022-23 or 2023-24 seasonaccording to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The report said the in-season tournament would begin with a pool game as part of the regular season, after which the eight teams with the best records would move on to a knockout tournament that would come to a head before Christmas.
The new format is inspired in-season competitions in European football like the Spanish Copa del Rey and the UEFA Champions League.
Carrots for both sides
To encourage players, it is a question of allocating one million dollars to each player on the winning teamand there may be other financial rewards in store for athletes before the deal is finalized.
The NBA hopes the new format will generate big profits from television exhibition as well as sponsorships. There have been some concerns over revenue as there will be fewer games in the season – the new format would reduce the number of regular season games from 82 to 78.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver advocates the new organization as he believes it will gain popularity with players and fans alike, especially after witnessing the success of in-season competitions in Europe.
