“Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are both resting”

The BCCI secretary recently revealed that the board plans to keep two different teams, which means that India will be represented at two different venues simultaneously. This was nothing new, earlier in 2021 India were playing two rounds simultaneously. Virat Kohli’s side faced England, while the ODI side led by Shikhar Dhawan played in Sri Lanka. Separate teams for separate formats is nothing new. England and Australia used this ploy to their advantage. With matches increasing day by day, players are stretching and having split squads could be the solution.

Former cricketer Ashish Nehra has said this is the way to go, meaning ‘all format’ players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will soon be playing selective cricket. Both were rested for the five-game T20I series.

“We’re already seeing less and less of these all-format players,” he told ‘Cricbuzz.’

“Even in India, how many players are there right now playing in all three formats? And you named two: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma. Both are resting. And because of that, so many players have an opportunity. But you will see this thing in times to come.

The former Indian designer who played his last match against Sri Lanka in 2017, added that with a busy cricket schedule on the cards, Kohli and Rohit will miss most games.

“With the amount of cricket that is happening, you have so many T20I, World Cup in four years, T20 World Cup in two years. When all of this happens, you will need to increase the pool of players.

“And then you have to be careful who you support when a big tournament comes around. As if it were a five-game series, who would you support when the T20 World Cup is right around the corner. It is simply impossible for someone to play three formats without taking a break,” he signed.
