The Gathering cards for Dominaria United’s limited format

Magic: The Gathering offers a host of different formats, including Limited. This is a draft format and is often a very popular option when a new extension drops. With Dominaria United coming soon, it’s time to see which cards will be the most powerful or popular in this format.

Dominaria United is the latest expansion for Magic: The Gathering and will release on September 1, 2022 for digital formats and September 9, 2022 for all physical storefronts. With the expansion on the horizon, what are the best blue spells to consider for Limited?


How can Blue control the flow of Limited in Magic: The Gathering?

Blue is going to be useful in a lot of decks/deck archetypes. However, it’s a bit more complex to play in Limited compared to other colors, as it’s something that’s built mostly around deception and control.

It is going to be very difficult to determine which cards to keep and which to ignore, because Limited in Magic: The Gathering is generally an aggressive format. Low cost, high value cards will be ideal over many counterspells.

  • Blue White: flight time
  • Blue red: Spells/Aggro
  • Blue green: Kicker/Mana Ramp
  • Dark blue: Control

However, Blue/Black may be the less ideal of these situations. Since players have access to more Commons/Uncommons in Limited, the focus here will be on those particular rarities.


1) Mystic Battlewing (Creature)

Flying creatures are incredibly popular in blue, and this 2 power, 1 toughness is already quite ideal for Flying/Aggro decks. However, he has another powerful ability that he can take advantage of if kicked.

When this comes into play, if the Magic: The Gathering player has paid their Kicker 1 red mana, discard your hand, then draw two cards. Although it doesn’t sound great, the strategy will be to burn your hand and then play with the Kicker to draw two cards with no downside.

It could also be useful in other formats if you’re running a graveyard scavenge, but if you have cards that aren’t useful this could be a great way to play around and try something better. If players aren’t interested in the Kicker and just want an aggressive UW flying deck, it will also shine there.


2) Combat Research (Enchantment – Aura)

Another great card for flying decks, Combat Research is going to be a very fun Uncommon Magic: The Gathering card. Best applied when players can’t block – so mainly fliers. It grants a creature the ability to draw a card each time it deals combat damage to a player.

However, if you have a legendary to equip it, even better. Suddenly, this also adds +1/+1 and Protection 1. The latter means whenever this creature is the target of an opponent’s spell or ability, counter it unless that player pays 1 mana.

Since every Dominaria United pack contains at least 1 Legendary, it won’t be hard to find a card that works well with it. It’s a great choice, even for its basic ability, to get a free card draw.


3) Fountain Djinn (Creature)

Although expensive, this card would also work well with Combat Research. A flyer with 4 power and 4 toughness, it will be quite a fun way to do damage easily. Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, this creature also lets you choose one of three abilities.

  • Fountain Djinn gets +1/+1 until end of turn
  • Exile Fountain Djinn, then return it to the battlefield under its owner’s control at the next end step
  • Gaze 1

Monon-Blue decks rarely rely on powerful bombs to win games and instead have to whittle down players. In a deck full of spells, they can create a huge creature to secure a win, or even just peer into a few cards to help figure out what to play next.

This will be a creature that, despite being a 4-drop, will be played in Magic: The Gathering’s Limited format.


4) Hinder momentum

Impede Momentum doesn’t launch at instantaneous speed, and that’s a good thing. That would take it from Common to at least Uncommon or Rare, maybe. Although it costs 2 mana, it will not be early gameplay. But what is this card for?

When you cast this on a creature, tap it and put three stun counters on it. If a creature with a stun counter becomes untapped, remove a stun counter instead. Thus, this player will have to wait several turns to use this creature.

This will in particular be used on creatures with Enlistment to avoid seeing them explode your front line. It’s worth having a few in your Magic: The Gathering deck, to make sure your opponent is slowed down for as long as possible. Having a few will be fine, but too much is also possible.


5) Phyrexian Espionage (Sorcery)

Phyrexian Espionage gives blue decks one of the things they need most in Magic: The Gathering – card drawing. For 3 mana, you can draw two cards, which is fantastic in itself. However, for 5 mana (2 mana kicker – 1 Black), he also punishes other players.

If you call the Kicker, opponents will suddenly lose cards at the most inopportune times. If you call the Kicker, all opponents discard a card. This is great if your opponent is out of cards or has an empty hand, but has just drawn something they can’t use yet.
