For the first time, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo will host a rodeo qualifying event in Uvalde in 2023.

Organizers said they were holding the event in Uvalde in hopes it would help the economy and businesses in the town, which is still grappling with the tragic primary school shooting where a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers in May.

The event will be open to all Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association card and license holders, competing for a spot at the San Antonio Rodeo in February.

With more than 800 competitors, the preliminary competition will take place at the Uvalde County Fairplex from Monday, January 9 through January 13 and is free to the public. Paid finals featuring the top 15 cowboys and cowgirls from each event will take place on Saturday, January 14. The top 10 overall will qualify for the San Antonio Rodeo.

Tickets are on sale now for $15 for the final. Box seating and VIP seating will be available at a later date, the rodeo wrote.

The 2023 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo will be held February 9-26 at the AT&T Center.
