Report card format: AC shows growth at all levels. | Story

Even without its Christmas boost, the adult contemporary format has a great story to tell, whether looking at stocks month-over-month, this June versus last year. , or comparing the first six months of 2022 to those of 2020 and/or 2021, through four keynote demos. It’s one of the many takeaways from Indoor RadioNielsen analysis of quarter-hour average share data between Nielsen PPM markets for Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to midnight. The analysis includes the average AQH shares of each format to calculate January to June delivery in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Comparing the stock delivery in the first half of 2022 with that of 2020 and 2021, AC is only one of the formats with gains on the demo chart. Others are classic hits, urban ACs, adult hits, and rhythm ACs. The trends in the opposite direction are country, CHR and rhythmic-CHR.

While it still ranks the undisputed number one, news/discussion isn’t in growth mode: it’s showing steadily declining shares in all four demos from January to June 2022. And while the country, still ranked third , is down year over year, whether it is the first -half of this year compared to last year, or June 2022 compared to June 2021, at the same time it rebounded from January to June 2022 among people aged 6 and over and aged 25 to 54.

Another format up in the 6+ demo from the first half of 2020 to that of 2022 is sports, also up 18-34 and 25-54. Figures from January to June show rising trends across the board for AC, classic rock, hot AC, sports, urban contemporary and modern/alternative rock, the latter even though its shares have declined since 2020.

Comparing shares from June 2021 to June 2022, AC, Classic Hits, Urban AC, Urban Contemporary and Rhythm AC are up across the board, while News/Talk, Country, CHR and contemporary Spanish have gone the other way.
