The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is so close and the countdown is well and truly on to the first ever World Cup tournament to be held in the Middle East.

32 nations have qualified and all eyes will be on them for 29 days from mid-November to mid-December as a truly unique tournament takes place across Qatar.

For the past 12 years Qatar has planned to host the world and this tournament will be like no other.

Below are the answers to some of the key questions ahead of the 2022 World Cup.


Why is the World Cup taking place in November this year?

After Qatar was awarded the World Cup in 2010, it was quickly decided that it would be too hot to host the tournament during its normal window during the summer months of June and July. Therefore, the first ever Winter World Cup would take place. National leagues around the world, and particularly in Europe, have had to postpone their seasons to host this Winter World Cup. Most will restart in late December and early January.


What are the laws in Qatar for the World Cup?

Drinking laws in Qatar have been relaxed for the tournament as fans will have certain areas where they can drink inside and outside the stadiums. There are also dedicated fan areas and booze tanks where fans can sober up. In a recent interview with our UK partners at Sky Sports, Qatar’s World Cup bid leader Nasser Al Khater said everyone is welcome in Qatar, including members of the LGBTQ+ community. He also said that fans from the LGBTQ+ community can bring rainbow flags and show their affection. Qatar has not changed anti-LGBTQ+ laws amid concerns from visiting fans, but Al Khater told Sky that ‘no one will be discriminated against during the 29-day tournament and gay fans can stand the hand”.


What are the dates for the 2022 World Cup?

The World Cup starts on November 20, 2022 and the final will take place on December 18, 2022.


What time do World Cup matches start?

Kick-off times for group stage matches will be at 5 a.m., 8 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (all ET).

How do World Cup groups work?

Each of the eight World Cup groups has four teams. The top two teams from each group advance to the Round of 16 to advance to the Round of 16. The last two teams in each group are eliminated. If you win a knockout match you advance to the next round and if you lose you are eliminated.

If the teams finish tied on points in their World Cup group stage standings, the following criteria are used to determine which team will advance to the last 16:

Each team can select a 26-man squad for their World Cup roster. This is an increase from the usual 23-man squad due to the added demands of attending a World Cup midway through the club’s season.
