MLS 2022 calendar format, dates will change slightly ahead of World Cup


The 2022 MLS season will see a slight change in its schedule format and conference roster to align with the international soccer schedule next year, the league announced on Friday. The MLS regular season kicks off earlier than ever on February 26, 2022.

Due to the FIFA 2022 schedule, MLS will seek to avoid scheduling matches during FIFA’s international windows in March, June or September. The league will only consider scheduling a game during the March window or the second weekend of the June double window at the request of a team. Teams cannot request to play games during the September window, during the home stretch of the regular season

As part of the conference roster, Charlotte FC will play its inaugural season next year as the 28th team in MLS. Charlotte FC will participate in the Eastern Conference, while Nashville SC will play in the Western Conference, giving both conferences 14 teams each.

All teams will play a 34-game regular season with 17 home games and 17 away games, including eight non-conference opponents once. The MLS regular season schedule will feature all weekend games with the exception of five or fewer midweek games, targeting one each in May, June, and July, and two in August.

After three straight weeks of action from the 2022 Audi MLS Cup qualifiers, the MLS Cup will be played on November 5, more than two weeks before the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar on November 21 and more. one week before the player’s release date of November 14.

Decision Day, the regular season finale, will take place on October 9. The full MLS regular season schedule will be announced later this year.
