Format Report Card: Adult Hits, AC Show Best Growth Trends. | Story

No matter how you look Indoor RadioNielsen’s latest monthly analysis of quarter-hour average share data between PPM markets Monday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to midnight – which includes the average monthly AQH shares of each format to calculate January delivery through September in 2020, 2021 and 2022 – adult hits are enabled the way up.

Looking at 2022 itself, the format of hits from the 80s-90s and then a few is up 0.3 in share of people aged 6 and over from January to September, while it is also in up from 0.4 year-to-date 2020 to the same in 2022. It’s actually the only format with share growth in both directions.

Four formats – adult contemporary, classic hits, urban contemporary and rhythmic AC – posted market share gains of 0.3 or more from January to September. 2021 to Jan.-Sept. 2022. Looking at additional formats with similar growth from Jan-Sept. 2020, apart from adult hits, urban air conditioning and sports are also up 0.4 or more.

In terms of formats on the rise since the start of this year, adult hits join modern/alternative rock, classic rock and country, the latter two up 0.6. For the country, you can call it a comeback, as stocks since 2020 are down 0.7.

Looking at the top five 6+ formats according to Nielsen for 2022 so far, four of the five are showing growth in one way or another, either since the first of this year or since 2020 or 2021. The only one of five where it doesn’t is the top one, news/talk, which is shifted by 0.7 from January to September, and by 0.1 and 0.4 from January to September. 2020 or Jan.-Sept. 2021 to that of 2022.
