Brother X-Series MFC-J6957DW review: ideal large-format inkjet for small businesses on a budget

[ad_1]

Brother’s MFC-J6957DW X-Series is the company’s flagship large-format inkjet MFP and offers busy workgroups an extensive range of print, copy, scan and fax functions for a very low outlay. modest.

It has impressive capacity, with three 250-sheet A3 cassettes plus a 100-page A3 multi-purpose tray (MPT) and complements these with an A3 color flatbed scanner paired with a 50-page duplex automatic document feeder (ADF ).

A4 print speeds have been improved, increasing the MFC-J6947DW’s 22ppm to 30ppm, and its daily duty cycle increases by 75% to 3,500 pages. It is also well connected; it can be connected via USB, 10/100 Ethernet or 802.11a/n 5GHz wireless, and there’s built-in support for NFC, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint and a bunch of cloud services.

Another winning attribute is its laser beating running costs. Brother supplies the MFC-J6957DW with a full set of standard ink cartridges, although during installation it must prime its ink tanks so that the first set has reduced print capacity. Once they’re dry, upgrade to the high yield versions and you’ll only pay 1p for a mono A4 page and 4.5p for a color page. Plus, you can enable Brother’s Secure Function Lock to control color usage for each. user.

While the tanks fill up, you can download Brother’s generic setup utility, choose your model, and let it load the drivers and firmware update tool. It also installs Brother’s iPrint&Scan Windows desktop utility, which uses workflows for one-click print and scan operations, and you can add the free Nuance PaperPort 14 SE document management software.

Brother’s Secure Cloud Print portal lets you print PDFs, images and Office documents remotely using a browser. To do this, simply bookmark the URL displayed on the color touch screen, choose a file, send it and publish it within 24 hours to the printer using the PIN code six-digit number generated by the portal.

Remote printing features include Brother’s Print to Email service. After activating it from the MFP’s web console, it creates a unique address to which you can send attachments from anywhere. Mobile workers are also getting in on the act, with Brother’s Mobile Connect iOS and Android Apps providing scan to mobile devices as well as remote printing services.

Scanning features are equally versatile and include sending scans to PCs with Brother software installed, network shares, email, FTP or SharePoint servers, as well as direct email addresses registered on the touchscreen. Cloud destinations are easy to set up using Brother’s Web Connect portal. You can choose OneNote, OneDriveBox, Google Drive, Evernote or drop boxadd your account details, enter the unique 11-digit code provided on the printer’s touchscreen, and protect each account with a PIN code.

We have found that the maximum speed is only achievable for monochrome printing using the driver’s Normal setting and drops significantly when higher resolutions are selected. Our 30-page test Word document returned 30ppm in normal mode but only 2.1ppm in best mode, while our difficult 24-page color DTP test print delivered at 20ppm and 1.8ppm respectively.

That said, the print quality in Normal mode is fine for general office use. Text is crisp and clean with 12pt font sizes, while monochrome photos reveal plenty of detail in darker areas. Color output quality is also impressive: smooth transitions between complex color fades in our test patterns result in high-quality reports and detailed photos, with no obvious banding in large monochrome blocks.

The printer handles A3 poster printing extremely well. Using the rear MPT tray, our A3 color poster took just ten seconds in Normal mode on 80gsm paper and 62 seconds in Best mode on thick 220gsm card, the rich color quality of Brother ink making them vibrant and eye-catching.

Print speeds are variable, but Brother’s MFC-J6957DW makes up for that with an amazing array of features. Ideally suited to SMBs on a tight budget, this affordable wide-format inkjet offers low running costs, good output quality, and the best cloud and mobile support.
