Baccarat table layout explained: the difference between large and mini tables layout

There was a time when few players knew how to play at a baccarat table. Games in casinos were often reserved for the most discerning customers, adding a mystique that would only disappear completely when online platforms like Twin Spiers Casino introduced the game to the masses.

The truth is, baccarat itself is not fancy; it’s simple to learn, and anyone can play it – and the game is very popular in the Far East in places like Macau. Also, in online games at least the stakes don’t have to be high and you can only bet for a few dollars.

That being said, there is often a difference between big players and what we will call “normal” baccarat games in physical casinos. This is where the big and mini-tables come in.

Mini Baccarat Table Layout

For most players, the mini-baccarat table is one they will recognize. It’s more like a blackjack table, with a dealer behind and up to seven seats deployed in front for players to sit down and play.

The action on a mini-baccarat table remains simple, with the croupier executing the game. Each player must bet on the banker, the player or a tie by placing his chips in the corresponding box in front of him. The dealer then deals two sets of two cards, one representing the player and the other the banker. Whichever result is closest to nine without exceeding (all totals greater than ten have ten removed, so 16, for example, becomes 6) wins. There will be different house rules as to whether one hand or another can draw a third card.

Once the totals are determined, the dealer automatically accumulates the chips of the losing players and pays the winnings to those who guessed the player or the banker correctly.

So you can see that the layout of the mini baccarat table is nice and simple. This explains why you are more likely to see it for small stakes in live casinos – and why it is used in online casinos.

Layout of the large baccarat table

The large baccarat table is physically much larger, making an almost complete circle to allow up to 12 or 14 players to fit at a time. Note that 13 is not allowed due to its association with bad luck.

With more players, in real casinos at least, there is more work required to administer the game, and there will likely be not one but two dealers and a caller to run the action.

If you are visiting Las Vegas or other gambling towns, you might not see a great baccarat table layout. This is because they mostly stay in the VIP areas, which you might never see unless you have bottomless pockets. In addition, these areas may have a specific dress requirement, which only adds to the exclusivity.

Aside from the size of the minimum wagering requirements in these VIP areas, the actual game is the same whether you are playing on the mini or the big baccarat table.

Online baccarat options

Playing baccarat tables online is easy. You have the usual lively tables, using real number generators to select cards, or live dealer casino games broadcast from a studio.

Either way, the layout of online baccarat is invariably the mini-baccarat table game. Because players are “virtual”, there is no need to squeeze as many high paying customers as possible around each table online.

If you are planning to try baccarat for the first time in a real casino, it is a good idea to try it online first, so that you get used to how the game works without worrying about what’s going on and without feeling stupid in front of others.

Confident in your newfound knowledge, then you can sit back feeling like a real James Bond and hope to take the house for heaps of money.
