How does the 2022 MLB playoffs work?

Gone is the Wild Card game, essentially a one-game elimination series, which has existed since 2012. This one-game showdown is replaced by a best-of-three Wild Card series.

Here’s how the new Major League Baseball playoff standings work in each league:

Seed n°1: Best league record

Seed #2: Winner of the second best division

Seed #3: Division winner with third-best record

Seeded #4: Wild Card team with the best record

Seed #5: Wild Card team with the second-best record

Seed #6: Wild Card team with the third best record

In the Wild Card round, the No. 3 seed, who is the winner of the division with the worst record, will face the No. 6 seed in each league, and the No. 4 seed will face the No. series #5. The three-game Wild Card series begins October 7.

The top two seeds in each league receive first-round byes and advance to the Division Series. The series of divisions begins on October 11 in each league.

The League Championship Series begins on October 18, with the winner of each league qualifying for the World Series.

The World Series begins on October 28 with Game 1 going to the team with home-court advantage (the one with the best regular season record) and ends on November 5, if all seven games are needed.

The winners of the MLB Wild Card Series format would face the Division winners in the Division Series. This is a best-of-five series, with the top two division winners from each league being the highest seed in a new 2-2-1 format.

This year in the MLB playoffs there will be a Wild Card round which is a three game series in both leagues and will be played at the top seed’s home park. This replaces the old singular Wild Card game format.

Starting with the 2022 MLB playoff format, there will be six wildcard teams. A total of 12 Major League Baseball teams are in the playoffs, six division winners and six non-division winners with the best records, called Wild Cards.

There will be 12 teams in the playoffs, six from the American League and six from the National League. This is a major expansion for Major League Baseball. Until 2012, teams had to win their division to advance to the playoffs.

No, the single Wild Card game has been replaced by two best-of-three Wild Card series in the new post-season format for the 2022 season. The original Wild Card game launched in 2012 and it has been played until in the 2021 MLB playoffs.

The two division winners with the best records get a bye to the division series. The next four teams go to WCS. WCS winners face both teams on a bye in the division series.
